Tasca Runs Second-Quickest Lap of the Weekend, Loses Close First-Round Matchup with Courtney Force at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 15, 2013—Bob Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang team ran their second-quickest lap of the weekend in a first-round loss to Courtney Force at zMAX Dragway.

“We knew it would be a tough first round with Courtney,” Tasca said. “We’re disappointed, but we have a lot to focus on tomorrow and then we leave for Dallas to see if we can defend our win there.”

Tasca Racing
Now headquartered near Charlotte in Concord, N.C., Tasca Racing was founded by legendary Ford dealer Bob Tasca Sr. in Rhode Island in 1962, after he realized the incredible potential of “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” during drag racing’s infancy. At 16 years old, Bob Sr. started his first job at a Ford dealership. He opened his own Ford dealership at 27. Seventy years later Tasca Ford still exists, run by the second and third generations of the Tasca family. Bob Tasca III, grandson of Bob Sr., has led the racing branch of the family since 2008 as driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car. When he’s not involved with his race team, Bob III works at the family dealership. The Tasca family is proud to say more than 50 years after Tasca Racing was founded, the phrase “Win on Sunday Sell on Monday” is alive and well within the Tasca team.

Tasca Earns 100th Career Funny Car Round Win at Dollar General NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway

CONCORD, N.C., April 21, 2013—Bob Tasca earned his 100th-career Funny Car round win at the Dollar General NHRA 4-Wide Nationals on Sunday at zMAX Dragway.

After qualifying p7 with a 4.162-second lap at 307.16 mph in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang, Tasca clocked the best pass of his first-round quad (4.152, 307.44) to reach the career milestone.

Tasca smoked the tires to a 6.399 at 110.94 in round two, as opponents Matt Hagan and Blake Alexander advanced. In the special format the NHRA Mello Yello Series competes with once a year at the four-lane track near Charlotte, drivers qualify and then compete four cars at a time.

The career milestone gives the team, many of whom have been with Tasca since his rookie year, momentum for next week’s O’Reilly Auto Parts SpringNationals in Houston.

“It was a really exciting first-round win for our team, to earn our 100th round win with Motorcraft and Quick Lane,” said Tasca, a sixth-year driver from Rhode Island. “We weren’t so excited in the second round. We weren’t expecting the car to do what it did. We really didn’t change a whole lot. We were hoping to go out there and run a 4.12 and give ourselves a shot to get into the final round, but it wasn’t what the racing gods had in store.

“We made a lot of progress with this Motorcraft/Quick Lane car coming out of Las Vegas and we’re at the beginning of three in a row. We want to gain some points. We picked up some points on some people ahead of us, and put a few on some people behind us, but that’s not enough. You’ve got to keep going rounds and that’s what we’ll be focused on doing in Houston.

“One-hundred wins, it’s kind of great to get that monkey off my back. It kind of crept up on me. The only thing I’m hoping for is that the next 100 come a whole lot quicker.”

Tasca Draws John Force, Tony Pedregon and Blake Alexander as First-Round Opponents at NHRA 4-Wide Nationals

CONCORD, N.C., April 20, 2013—Bob Tasca will face Tony Pedregon, John Force and Blake Alexander in the first round of the Dollar General 4-Wide NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway Sunday.

In the special format the NHRA Mello Yello Series competes with once a year at the four-lane track near Charlotte, drivers qualify and then compete four cars at a time.

Tasca qualified p7 on a 4.162-second lap at 307.16 mph to face Force (p2, 4.039, 316.08), Pedregon (p15, 4.739, 189.18) and Alexander (p10, 4.280, 293.22).

“That first run (Sunday), we’ll have an 85-degree racetrack,” Tasca said. “It’ll be the best conditions of the weekend, and then it’ll get much hotter as the afternoon goes on and the runs we ran (Saturday) will be the ones we’ll fall back on. We’ve just got to get past first round. It’s going to be a crapshoot. There hasn’t been a car out here that has had the opportunity to run on an 85-degree track because we didn’t get the Friday night session. It’ll be anybody’s ball game out there. I feel real confident about our chances. Once you get past first round, anything can happen.”

The first two Funny Car qualifying sessions were rained out Friday.

“The 4-Wide Nationals turned into a one-day qualifying nationals,” Tasca said. “That sets all the teams back because you don’t have the opportunity to really get the car dialed-in. You come into Saturday not qualified and you have to go down the track first session, which we did. In the second session, we wanted to get aggressive and see if we could step up. The track got worse because it’s in the heat of the day and you saw a lot of cars smoking the tires.

“But really, the mindset is you qualified, so there’s no reason to drag it up and try to run the same number. We just pulled on it a little bit too much. The good news is we got a full pull from the first session we can look at. We got some good data on that second run to get prepared for tomorrow morning. Tomorrow morning, we’ll have unbelievable conditions.”

ESPN2’s race coverage is scheduled for 7-10 p.m. ET Sunday.

Tasca, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car Team Ready to Race in Team’s Backyard at zMAX Dragway

CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 18, 2013—Bob Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car team are ready to race in the team’s backyard this weekend at the Dollar General 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway near Charlotte.

“It’s time for our team to get that first win of the season,” Tasca said. “What better place than the 4-Wide Nationals. We made a bunch of changes heading into Las Vegas and I really feel it’s all going to come together this weekend.”

Good news would certainly be welcomed by the New Englander in the wake of the Boston Marathon attack.

“The Marathon is so important to the people of Boston, and everyone in the Northeast, really,” said Tasca, who lives just an hour from Boston in Rhode Island. “It was difficult to see the images and footage from that day. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected.”

This weekend’s 4-Wide Nationals feature four-wide racing, now one of the most popular races on the NHRA Mello Yello circuit.

ESPN2’s qualifying show is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. ET on Saturday, with the race from 7-10 p.m. ET Sunday.

Tasca, FordParts.com Funny Car Team Lose Battle of Lane Choice at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 16, 2012–Lane choice proved pivotal at the rain-plagued O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at zMAX Dragway Sunday.

Bob Tasca III and the FordParts.com Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car team qualified ninth with a 4.124-second pass at 307.09 mph, giving lane choice to the higher-qualified Matt Hagan (p8) in Round 1. Lane choice, always important on race day, proved crucial after the four-hour rain delay as all cars in the right lane lost but one – John Force, who defeated daughter Courtney Force after her Ford smoked the tires and took a hard turn in the left lane.

Tasca smoked the tires and coasted to a 6.313 at 108.04 to Hagan’s 4.057 at 311.56.

“The rain really hurt the racetrack, that right lane,” said Tasca, who competed in the FordParts.com livery for the second and final time this year. “We didn’t have lane choice and we knew Hagan was going to go out and run a mid-0 and that’s what we had our car set up to do. The lane just wouldn’t hold it. Unfortunately it was an abrupt end to our day, but we have a four-in-a-row stretch and we have three more races back-to-back to get this Motorcraft/Quick Lane car back on track.”

The NHRA Full Throttle Series heads to Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Texas this weekend (Sept. 21-23, 2012).

Tasca, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Advance to Semifinals at 32,000-Horsepower Slugfest as Wood Bros., Bayne Watch

CHARLOTTE, April 15, 2012–Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang  Funny Car team had a little extra support at zMAX Dragway Sunday, in the form of Len and Eddie Wood of Wood Brothers Racing, NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Trevor Bayne and Donnie Wingo, crew chief of the No. 21 Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion.

Tasca cruised through a brutal Round 1 quad that included two other Fords – Tim Wilkerson and Robert Hight, who came to Charlotte on a three-race winning streak. The Motorcraft/Quick Lane team advanced on a 4.079 at 314.46 with Hight and went on to face Hight again in Round 2, with Cruz Pedregon and Jack Beckman rounding out Tasca’s side of the semifinals at the four-lane track.

Each round of eliminations features four cars on the four-lane drag strip, rather than the standard two.

It was in the semis where Tasca ran into trouble.

“You feel the race car, you listen to the race car, and on that run I felt it take the tire off right when the motor and the clutch were going one-to-one,” Tasca said. “I heard the motor jump way up, felt the car wash out, pulled it back into the center line, then I heard it start to recover. It was actually dropping cylinders, which gave the car the opportunity to gain traction. I didn’t know what was going on in the other lanes. I just wanted to get to that finish line, hoping that win light would come on.”

Hight went on to complete a weekend sweep for Ford Racing that included wins in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (Ricky Stenhouse Jr.) and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (Greg Biffle), a race Wood Brothers Racing and Bayne competed in Saturday night at Texas Motor Speedway.

“This was my first time on the line watching Funny Cars,” Bayne said. “That was the craziest thing I’ve ever felt. I felt like I was in the middle of an earthquake. I don’t know what that was on the Richter scale, but I definitely felt it shaking me a little bit. The sound, the vibration, all of it was pretty cool. If you’ve never been to a drag race, you should definitely come check it out.

“Bob did a great job holding it together there. I thought he was going to pull it off. He was really close. Unfortunately we’re going home, but he did a great job and I was glad to be a part of it today.”

Tasca heads to Houston in two weeks, where he’ll visit NASA’s Johnson Space Center with ESPN2. Bayne will be back in the driver’s seat of the No. 21 at Talladega Superspeedway in May.

Tasca, Motorcraft/Quick Lane Team Hungry for More after Runner-up Finish in Las Vegas

CONCORD, N.C., April 12, 2012–A runner-up finish makes a competitive driver hungry, so it’s no surprise Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car team are looking for a win this weekend at the NHRA 4-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.

Tasca comes to Charlotte fresh off of a runner-up finish in Las Vegas, where an all-Ford final saw Robert Hight win his third-consecutive Wally. Tasca just missed winning at zMAX last year, where he runnered-up at the 4-Wide race.

Momentum is high in the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Racing pit.

“We’re riding high going into the 4-Wide Nationals but I always try to take Bob Glidden’s advice not to let the highs get too high or the lows get too low,” Tasca said. “We’ll stay on an even keel and go to Charlotte ready for anything.”

After taking first-round losses at the first three races of the NHRA Full Throttle Series, Tasca won his first, second and third rounds of the year in one race – the first for Crew Chief Dickie Venables, Tasca’s longtime friend who joined sitting crew chiefs Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner at the controls just in time for the trip out west.

The chemistry was instant, the three gelled and are now one team with one mission, to win those close races that have so often gone in the opposing teams’ favor.

“(Dickie) balances out the personalities of Chris Cunningham and Marc Denner and really brings that new dimension to the team,” Tasca said. “It’s been great to watch them all work together and talk about the new ideas Dickie has. We’re all excited now about seeing what our Motorcraft/Quick Lane team can do.
