Tasca’s Mustang Funny Car to Feature JDRF Contest-Winning Design in Denver

DEARBORN, Mich., July 16, 2014 – The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car will have a different look as it speeds down the drag strip at the Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, Colo., July 18-20. The Funny Car’s paint scheme was designed by an 11-year-old with type 1 diabetes (T1D).

The car will be unveiled at Tasca’s Bandimere Speedway pit at 1:30 p.m. local time.

Carson Magee, a fifth grader from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho who was diagnosed with T1D four years ago at age 7, won the “Our Everyday Heroes” Race Car Design Contest for JDRF, hosted by Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) and its brands, Motorcraft and Quick Lane Tire and Auto Centers. As a result, his design graces Bob Tasca III’s Mustang this weekend.

Carson’s winning design, which pays homage to firefighters, emergency medical technicians, police and each of the U.S. armed services, was selected from 10 finalists by FCSD, JDRF and Tasca.

“The car looks great!” said Tasca who has been a key part of this contest since its inception in 2008. “For me, it’s always been about kids. There’s nothing more satisfying to me than to help children who have needs. This program has been able to raise funds, but even more than that it has raised awareness of juvenile diabetes.”

NHRA fans in Denver and watching on television will be able to donate $5 to JDRF during this weekend’s race by texting JDRF5 to 20222, then replying yes to the follow-up text.

Tasca, himself a father of four young boys, says he is inspired by the JDRF organization and the children it helps.

“There is a tremendous energy and organization behind JDRF that wants to find a cure for T1D,” said Tasca. “They’re not looking to treat it, although they are improving the lives of T1D kids’ with the technology that JDRF has come up with, they’re looking to cure it.

“I’ve been fortunate to be able to meet many T1D kids from across the country,” Tasca continued. “And to be around the winners and to see the joy that this contest brings to them and their families is really inspiring. We want to put on a great show not only for the Magee family who will be there, but for all of the other JDRF families watching on TV around the country.”

Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang have had some success wearing JDRF colors, particularly last year in Chicago when he became the first Ford to crack the 3-second barrier and advanced to the semi-finals.

He also was strong last year in Colorado’s thin mountain air with the car in its familiar Motorcraft/Quick Lane livery.

“We went to the finals last year in Denver and started a great Western Swing where we went to two out of three finals,” said Tasca. “We’ve got some energy with a car that’s running more consistent than it has been. Hopefully it’ll all come together for us in Denver and we get our first win of the year.”

The action in Denver gets underway on Friday, July 18, at 5:30 p.m. local time at Bandimere Speedway. Qualifying can be seen July 19 on ESPN2 from 11 p.m.-1 a.m. ET. Eliminations will air live July 20 on ESPN from 2:30-6 p.m. ET.

Seventy years later, Tasca Ford still exists, run by the second and third generations of the Tasca family.
