Tasca Stays p4, Races Tim Wilkerson in Rd 1 at “Big Go” in Indianapolis; All Eyes on NHRA Mello Yello Championship Points, Key Opening Matchups

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 1, 2013—Sunday’s two qualifying sessions at the “Big Go” in Indianapolis yielded plenty of good racing, but not a lot of movement in the NHRA Mello Yello Series Funny Car ladder.

Bob Tasca and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang team qualified on their lap from Saturday night – like most of the field – and stayed p4 with his 4.046-second pass at 313.88 mph.

Tasca faces fellow Ford driver Tim Wilkerson, who qualified 13th, in the first round Monday.

“Game on,” said an excited Tasca, who was No. 9 in the championship standings entering the race and looking to move up or at least maintain his spot above the top 10 cut-off for the playoffs. “We’re happy with what we saw earlier in the weekend and with that second run today. We’re ready to go. We have a hot rod that can win Indy.”

After tomorrow, the top 10 drivers in the point standings are playoff contenders. Points for those drivers will be reset, the rest of the field becomes spoilers, and a six-race charge to the finale in Pomona, Calif., where this year’s champion will be determined, begins.

Race day coverage for the U.S. Nationals begins at noon ET and concludes at 6 p.m. Monday on ESPN2.

Tasca Racing
Now headquartered near Charlotte in Concord, N.C., Tasca Racing was founded by legendary Ford dealer Bob Tasca Sr. in Rhode Island in 1962, after he realized the incredible potential of “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” during drag racing’s infancy. At 16 years old, Bob Sr. started his first job at a Ford dealership. He opened his own Ford dealership at 27. Seventy years later Tasca Ford still exists, run by the second and third generations of the Tasca family. Bob Tasca III, grandson of Bob Sr., has led the racing branch of the family since 2008 as driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car. When he’s not involved with his race team, Bob III works at the family dealership. The Tasca family is proud to say more than 50 years after Tasca Racing was founded, the phrase “Win on Sunday Sell on Monday” is alive and well within the Tasca team.
