POMONA, Calif. (Nov. 15, 2008) – Bob Tasca III and the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Shelby Mustang team made another step in the right direction in Pomona as the team ended the day in the No. 11 spot after getting bumped down to 14th before the final qualifying run.
Tasca’s 4.144-second run at 299.86 mph came in his second trip down the track, and his qualifying spot pits him up against the No. 6 qualifier, Ron Capps.
“Today was a great day for us,” said Tasca. “It’s nice to be in the show at the start of the day and not be behind the eight ball like we’ve been in the past couple of races. This gives Chris [Cunningham, crew chief] the opportunity to know that we’re in; we had nothing to lose going up to the line. He knows how to turn the dials, but when you’re not in you’re under a lot of pressure. And when you’re fighting to get in, you’re a little bit more conservative.”
Tasca’s first run of the day was a little aggressive, and only moved the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Mustang to about half-track. But with a spot in the field heading into the final run, Cunningham put together a solid tune-up to move his driver back up into the field.
“For us to go out and run a 4.14 run in the heat early in the session, was really good,” said Tasca. “We’re thrilled with that run today and we’re going into tomorrow with a lot of confidence. What can I say; this is the last race of the year and it’s going to be exciting for our team and for everyone out here battling for the championship. We’ve got Ron Capps in the first round tomorrow. I haven’t raced him since Denver, and we’re ready to get a win against him for the season. He’s a great driver, but for us, we’re just trying to make our own mark out here and we’ve got as good of chance as anyone to take a win tomorrow.”
Tomorrow’s first-round match-up will be the fourth meeting between Tasca and Capps this season. And while Capps enters the round with a 3-0 advantage, Tasca and his Motorcraft/Quick Lane team are prepared and eager to make Pomona the site of their first nitro Funny Car win together.
