Tasca Optimistic 2013 Changes, Top 10 Speeds at Test Will Lead to Success in Seventh NHRA Mello Yello Season

DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 5, 2014—Bob Tasca III is confident that last year’s mid-season clutch and setup changes and top 10 runs in the pre-season test last month in Palm Beach, Fla., will equate to a strong, maybe even championship-caliber, showing in his seventh season on the NHRA Mello Yello Funny Car circuit. The green light goes on this weekend at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals in Pomona, Calif.

The owner/driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang said he wasn’t happy with his car’s performance in the early part of 2013, which led to changing his clutch manufacturer and going to a different set up for first Las Vegas race.

“It took us a little while to put all the pieces together and it really all came together for us in Chicago when we were the first Ford in the threes with a 3.988 and only the third car to do that in Funny Car history,” Tasca said. “We really hit our stride on the West Coast swing and were the No. 1 point-getter during that part of the schedule, reaching the finals in Denver and Seattle.”

Tasca admits that later in the season things didn’t go his team’s way and that, along with the time it took to adapt to the changes, kept him out of the Countdown to the Championship playoffs. Not being in the title chase, however, afforded Team Tasca the luxury of real-world experimentation that allowed him to take the car off the truck at pre-season testing and post two top 10 times.

The Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang ran a 4.067-second lap with a top speed of 320.51 mph on the first day of testing, seventh fastest, and 4.084 and 314.39 on the final day, sixth fastest.

“It was the best opening test session we’ve ever had,” Tasca said. “Most of what we wanted to test worked as planned. We’re looking forward to building on that momentum in Pomona. I’m excited about the prospects for the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Mustang Funny Car this season. Our goal is to win the championship.”

Tasca Racing
Now headquartered near Charlotte in Concord, N.C., Tasca Racing was founded by legendary Ford dealer Bob Tasca Sr. in Rhode Island in 1962, after he realized the incredible potential of “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” during drag racing’s infancy. At 16 years old, Bob Sr. started his first job at a Ford dealership. He opened his own Ford dealership at 27. Seventy years later Tasca Ford still exists, run by the second and third generations of the Tasca family. Bob Tasca III, grandson of Bob Sr., has led the racing branch of the family since 2008 as driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car. When he’s not involved with his race team, Bob III works at the family dealership. The Tasca family is proud to say more than 50 years after Tasca Racing was founded, the phrase “Win on Sunday Sell on Monday” is alive and well within the Tasca team.
