JOLIET, Ill., June 30, 2013—Bob Tasca III became the first Ford Funny Car driver to make a three-second pass on Saturday, under the lights at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago.
Tasca drove his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang to a 3.988-second lap at 316.97 mph to join NHRA’s venerable “Three-Second Club” in a qualifying session that will go down in Mello Yello Series lore. The top four qualifiers clocked times in the three-second range.
“To be a part of history is something you dream about, and to be the first Ford in the threes is just a tremendous accomplishment for my team,” said Tasca, who starts p2 and faces Jeff Arend in Round 1. “We made big changes in this program coming out of Gainesville, basically started from scratch, and the guys have just been digging so hard these last couple of races. I guess what you say, a run like that, you put all the pieces together, and when they all come together, the car goes out and performs the way that it did.”
Tasca, who is competing with the “Our Everyday Heroes” JDRF paint scheme on his Funny Car this weekend, joined the Three-Second Club in the same session as Del Worsham.
“I was elated (when I saw the scoreboard),” Tasca said. “Off-the-charts excited. I’m an excitable person and when the car runs good, when you go out and set the record and become the first for Ford, with Ken Czubay (Vice President, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford Motor Company) here and Travis Hunt and Lori Dunn (from Ford Customer Service Division), people who have been with us in the trenches from Day 1 with this program, it doesn’t get any better than that. We’ll bottle up that energy and use it on Sunday.
“Hats off to every one of these guys on this Motorcraft/Quick Lane car, for all the dedication and hard work. The old analogy ‘hard work pays off,’ well, we got a little payoff on that run. But we didn’t come here to run a three-second run, we came here to win a race, and to do it with JDRF on the car, that’s our focus. That run is great. The data will be very important to us come playoff time, but we’ve got to get this Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang going rounds, winning races, and there’s no better time to do it than Chicago.”

Now headquartered near Charlotte in Concord, N.C., Tasca Racing was founded by legendary Ford dealer Bob Tasca Sr. in Rhode Island in 1962, after he realized the incredible potential of “Race on Sunday, Sell on Monday” during drag racing’s infancy. At 16 years old, Bob Sr. started his first job at a Ford dealership. He opened his own Ford dealership at 27. Seventy years later Tasca Ford still exists, run by the second and third generations of the Tasca family. Bob Tasca III, grandson of Bob Sr., has led the racing branch of the family since 2008 as driver of the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car. When he’s not involved with his race team, Bob III works at the family dealership. The Tasca family is proud to say more than 50 years after Tasca Racing was founded, the phrase “Win on Sunday Sell on Monday” is alive and well within the Tasca and Ford team.
