POMONA, Calif., Feb. 8, 2008 – For the second day of qualifying for Sunday’s Winternationals, Bob Tasca III experienced tire shake in his Motorcraft/Quick Lane Tire & Auto Center Shelby Mustang. Tasca’s qualifying effort in the Nitro Funny Car resulted in a 5.218 second, 292.08 mph run.
“We’re having the same problem as we did yesterday,” said Tasca. “We made a lot of changes to the car and we thought that it would show us something different, but it didn’t. It showed us the same as what we’ve been dealing with. We’re going to go in a little different direction for tomorrow.”
Tasca’s crew immediately began reviewing data from the run, trying to pinpoint what they need to do to make the car cooperate.
“It’s a new chassis and a different chassis configuration that we’re starting the season off with and it’s throwing us a curve,” said crew chief Mike Kloeber. “Besides the tire shake, all of the other indications show that our performance should be on par. When we do get past that tire shake, we’ve been in good shape in testing, but so far we’re having difficulty getting by that point.”
The team will have two more opportunities on Saturday to earn one of the 16 spots available for Sunday’s race.
“Drag racing is a sport of fractions of a second,” said Tasca. “You just have to find that sweet spot when the motor and the clutch and tires are in harmony and if they’re not the car shakes. When it shakes it might put run big speed, but it won’t ET and to win races, you’ve got to run ETs, not speed. We’ve got experienced guys and good parts and we’re going to figure this thing out. We’ve got two shots tomorrow, and I have full expectations that we’ll do well.”
