DEARBORN, Mich., Feb. 29, 2012—This year the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the global leader in finding cures and treatments for type 1 diabetes, will get a boost from the world’s fastest motorsport—the NHRA Full Throttle Series—thanks to Ford Customer Service Division (FCSD) and its brands Motorcraft and Quick Lane.
For the fifth consecutive year, FCSD will partner with JDRF to play host to the race car design contest, which pairs children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) with FCSD’s racing program in an effort that has raised more than $250,000 for diabetes research since 2008.
This year, children will design a paint scheme for the Motorcraft/Quick Lane Funny Car driven by Bob Tasca III. The contest moves back to Tasca Racing this year for the first time since 2009, after a successful two years with the No. 21 of Wood Brothers Racing and drivers Bill Elliott and Trevor Bayne.
For the first time, the contest will have a theme – “Our Everyday Heroes” – and the winner will receive the July 4th trip of a lifetime, to an NHRA Full Throttle Series race in Norwalk, Ohio. There, the young winner and his or her family will meet Tasca and serve as honorary crew members for the car that will display the paint scheme he or she designed—a very special patriotic JDRF livery.
“This partnership has yielded some great results over five years,” said Mary Lou Quesnell, Director of Marketing for FCSD. “While participation numbers have always been great, we expect a big buzz this year with the new patriotic theme and July 4th winner’s package.”
The winning paint scheme will be unveiled on the Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car at a press conference July 5, 2012, with the winner and family in attendance.
“I was so inspired by the winners of this contest in 2008 and 2009 and am proud to welcome it back to Tasca Racing and the Ford Shelby Mustang Funny Car team,” Tasca said. “The designs these kids come up with are just amazing to see. The winning patriotic design is going to look great in Motorcraft and Quick Lane colors.”
“We are so grateful to have the incredible support of Ford as our partner for the ‘Design a Race Car Contest,’ for the fifth year and counting,” said Mania Boyder, executive vice president of development for JDRF. “Each year, we are excited to see the creativity and uniqueness of design submissions by talented young people. And each year, the campaign helps JDRF in our work to spread awareness for type 1 diabetes, and raise funds for preventions, better treatments, and a cure for the disease and its complications.”
Motorcraft, a Ford Motor Company brand of automotive parts ranging from filters and spark plugs to engines and transmissions, will be the primary sponsor on the Wood Brothers No. 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup Ford Fusion for 12 races, beginning in February at the Daytona 500, a race they won last year.
